Updated CAFE Standards Will Help Slash Pollution in The Most Polluting Sector of Our Economy

In response to the updated Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards released today by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“The updated fuel efficiency standards released today by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will move us one step closer to cleaning up the most polluting sector of our economy: passenger vehicles. As prices reach record levels at the pump, it’s imperative that the Biden administration is taking these critical steps to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Not only will these standards cut pollution that’s exacerbating the worst effects of the climate crisis, but they’ll also save billions for consumers in fuel costs while paving the way for an accelerated clean energy transition within the motor vehicle industry.

“To fulfill President Biden’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas pollution by 2050, the administration must deliver a pathway that ensures 100% clean car sales by at least 2035. Today’s updated standards are a promising step towards that goal, but the administration must follow through with further action to increase efficiency, tackle vehicle pollution, and drive our economy to 100% pollution-free cars.”
