Trump Illegally Slams Brakes on EV Progress in Brazen Act of Sabotage

In response to the news that Trump’s Department of Transportation (DOT) moved to illegally block funding to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, a federal initiative to build EV charging stations nationwide, Evergreen Action Senior State Program Director Justin Balik released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is once again flouting the law and defying court orders to score ideological points. His administration’s move to block funding for a bipartisan effort to build out our national EV charging network is a blatant, illegal power grab thinly disguised as a bureaucratic update. Congress overwhelmingly approved this funding, the Biden administration allocated it, and the courts have already ruled against halting it—but Trump is plowing ahead anyway, throwing both red and blue state governments into chaos to deliberately sabotage a program he doesn’t like.

“This program is delivering real benefits to all 50 states—creating jobs, boosting economic opportunities, and cutting pollution. And crucially, it’s bringing much-needed federal investment to rural communities in states like Ohio and Texas. Just as these states are hitting their stride, Trump is attempting to kneecap progress to fuel a divisive culture war, even at the expense of communities that overwhelmingly supported him. His administration cannot rewrite the law to suit his political whims. State DOTs and Congress must hold the line. This program—the single largest EV charging infrastructure investment in U.S. history—is critical to modernizing our infrastructure and tackling the climate crisis, and it must move forward without disruption.”
