To Revamp World Bank, Biden Must Fire Malpass

In response to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen calling for the World Bank to revamp its business models to better address global economic threats like climate change, Evergreen Action Chief of Staff Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“Secretary Yellen is absolutely correct that the world cannot afford to delay addressing the systemic threat the climate crisis poses to the global economy, which is why it’s absurd to keep a climate denier as President of the World Bank. David Malpass has a long track record of climate denial, and during his tenure leading the World Bank, the institution has fallen behind its peers in areas crucial to addressing climate change, including green finance and sustained financing of fossil fuels. We can and must do better. If the Biden Administration is serious about making these major reforms to the World Bank, we need a new leader at its helm who will take climate change seriously.”

This week, Evergreen released No Room for Climate Denial at the World Bank detailing World Bank President David Malpass’ extensive track record of climate denial and ongoing support for oil and gas production via budgetary support, in conflict with scientific recommendations to keep warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
