Senate Republicans’ New Budget a Mirage Hiding the Harm It Would Inflict on American Families

Senate budget puts clean energy investments fueling manufacturing renaissance and saving families money at risk

Early this morning, Senate Republicans passed yet another FY2025 budget blueprint, one built on smoke and mirrors to hide the true costs of showering trillions in tax breaks on billionaires and big corporations. To pay for these handouts, their plan would slash essential programs like Medicaid and food assistance. It would also put at risk the clean energy investments fueling America’s manufacturing renaissance—investments that are creating tens of thousands of jobs and driving down household energy bills.

In response, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“With this budget blueprint, Senate Republicans have made their priorities clear: they’re not here to govern responsibly—they’re here to pretend. Pretend that slashing clean energy investments won’t raise energy bills or derail the manufacturing boom in their own states. Pretend that gutting health care and food assistance won’t hurt the people who depend on them. And pretend that trillions in tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations somehow comes at no cost to the American people. This budget is a mirage designed to hide the real harm it would inflict on families and communities across the country.

“This isn’t fiscal discipline—it’s fiscal deception. Senate Republicans are using budget gimmicks to make massive tax cuts for the wealthy disappear on paper, while setting the stage for devastating cuts to essential programs. At the same time, they’re opening the door to even more fossil fuel giveaways that will drive up costs and pollution. The result? Soaring energy bills, stalled clean energy projects, and more economic pain, all to bankroll a billionaire-backed agenda. If Trump and his allies think the public won’t see through it, they’re in for a rude awakening.”

Earlier this year, a national poll from YouGov revealed that 61 percent of voters want to keep the investments driving America’s growing clean energy sector, while only 18 percent support repealing them. When asked about specific programs and tax credits, voters overwhelmingly backed each by two-thirds or more, from incentives to bolster clean energy supply to consumer rebates that help lower energy bills to investments in solar manufacturing.
