IPCC Mitigation Report: Biden and Congress Cannot Afford Any More Delays On Climate Action

In response to the new climate change mitigation report released today by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“Today’s IPCC report once again makes clear what science has been telling us for years: for a shot at a liveable future, we must get off fossil fuels as fast as possible. Scientists and experts across the board have already outlined what must be done to defend our most vulnerable communities, protect our collective liveable future, and mitigate the worst effects of climate change. We must act now—not in six months, not after an election year; now.

“President Biden and Majority Leader Schumer have the legislation we need to get back on track to fighting this climate crisis head-on. The $555 billion in House-passed climate investments will supercharge America’s clean energy transition, create millions of good-paying jobs, safeguard our most vulnerable communities, and disendow petro-state dictators like Vladimir Putin. Amidst grim climate outlooks, the good news is that we can pass climate legislation today.

“The climate investments before Congress have widespread support from Senate Democrats, there’s no good reason not to get them passed immediately. The ball is in President Biden and Majority Leader Schumer’s court; whether they can secure a deal will be pivotal for both their legacies and our last, best chance to sustain a habitable planet. The alarms continue; they must act now.”
