In response to the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of The United States (SCOTUS), Evergreen Action Executive Director Jamal Raad released the following statement:

“Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation today to the Supreme Court shatters long-overdue glass ceilings and delivers a well-qualified and fair justice to the bench at a moment when the stakes for the climate have never been higher. As corporate polluters and far-right interests continue their all-out legal assault on America’s bedrock environmental laws, Americans need Jackson as a champion for clean air and clean water.

“Justice Jackson’s confirmation represents a historic opportunity to bring new perspectives to a Supreme Court that has too often ignored the voices of marginalized communities throughout its history. At a time when Black and Brown communities are facing disproportionate impacts of pollution and climate change, Justice Jackson’s voice will be an important addition as both the first Black woman and first public defender on the court. While America took a huge and historic step today, we must also remember that the Court has been packed and politicized by Republican Senate leaders over the past decade, putting 50-years of environmental precedent at risk. Today’s confirmation is a step in a long effort to have a fairer, balanced court that better represents all of America.”
