EPA releases guidance for implementation grants, $4.6 billion available for states, local governments, Tribes, and territories

In response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) release of guidance for Phase Two of the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program (CPRG), Evergreen Action State Program Director Justin Balik released the following statement: 

“Today, EPA released its Notice of Funding Opportunity for the CPRG Implementation Grants—$4.6 billion in transformative federal funds available to states, Tribal nations, and local governments, to advance the bold climate policies developed with the planning grants. 

“We are pleased that EPA is moving quickly to build on the Planning Grants and give states and other jurisdictions significant resources to decarbonize the most heavily polluting sectors of our economy. The grants announced today, with applications due in the spring and to be awarded starting next fall, will be a keystone in states’ ability to enact visionary climate policies and meaningfully address systemic and institutional environmental inequities.

“A clean energy future is possible, and these grants will help make that future a reality, faster.” 

During IRA negotiations, Evergreen championed funding for the CPRG because states, Tribal nations, and local governments have a central role to play in America’s clean energy transition. After the IRA passed, Evergreen submitted recommendations to EPA on program design and led a coalition letter to EPA signed by 40 organizations. And earlier this year, Evergreen released CRPG implementation guidance for governors and state leaders, in partnership with RMI. The program details announced today are consistent with Evergreen’s recommendations.
