In response to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) vote to approve the Calcasieu Pass 2 liquid natural gas (CP2 LNG) export facility, Evergreen Action’s Senior Policy Lead for Energy Transition Mattea Mrkusic released the following statement:
“FERC’s vote to rubber-stamp the CP2 LNG project is nothing short of climate vandalism—and a massive environmental injustice for frontline communities. It’s simple: We do not need to lock in years of dirty liquid methane gas exports and the public health disasters that come with them. It’s long past time for FERC to listen to the people who are most impacted by deadly fossil fuel infrastructure and better factor the environmental justice impacts of proposed projects into their approval process.
“Now, it’s imperative that the Department of Energy engages with frontline communities in the Gulf Coast and follows the facts as it updates its public interest determination for LNG exports. The evidence is clear: New LNG export terminals are simply not compatible with a healthy, livable future.”
Leading advocates in the Gulf Coast have long called on FERC to prioritize climate and environmental justice in their decision-making. For more information on the DOE’s temporary pause on approvals for new LNG export terminals, read Evergreen’s explainer here.
