In response to the New York Times reporting that the Biden administration is pausing a decision on the Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) project along with 16 other natural gas export terminals, Evergreen Action Energy Transition Policy Lead Mattea Mrkusic released the following statement: 

“If this reporting is accurate, it would be a major victory for frontline communities, especially in the Gulf, who have been leading the fight against new export terminals to preserve public health and a safer climate future. Frontline communities, particularly Black, Brown, and low-income communities living near export terminals, have borne the brunt of cancer-causing pollution and environmental degradation caused by these facilities and related fracking for too long.

“Let’s be clear: Fossil fuel export projects are not remotely in the public interest. Don’t be fooled by Big Oil’s profit-hungry greenwashing. LNG isn’t a 'bridge-fuel'—it’s a bridge to climate disaster, spewing out harmful air pollutants and methane pollution when our rapidly-heating planet simply can’t afford it. Putting an end to expanded LNG exports would be a historic decision for our climate and frontline communities. And it would show that the Biden administration is willing to take on the fossil fuel industry to protect public health.” 

Recent polling from Data for Progress and Fossil Free Media found that a strong majority of voters support the Biden administration taking steps to limit the amount of fossil gas that America exports.
