Today, Donald Trump announced a sweeping 10% tariff on all imports from every country around the world. He also pledged to impose additional, country-specific tariffs, including a 20% tariff on the European Union and a 24% tariff on Japan, targeting nations he claims have the most unfair trade relationships with the United States. In response Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“Donald Trump just stood in the Rose Garden and promised every American a price hike. His plan to slap tariffs on all imports—plus even steeper tariffs on dozens of countries, including our allies—amounts to a national tariff tax that working families will be forced to pay. From groceries to energy bills, everyday essentials are about to get more expensive. And the communities hit hardest will be the ones already struggling to get by. This isn’t ‘liberation’. It’s Trump’s deliberate plan to squeeze the middle class to hand out tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations.

“This is just the latest chapter in Trump’s price hike agenda. Since returning to office, he’s frozen clean energy investments, blocked affordable energy projects, and imposed tariff taxes that are already driving up prices nationwide. Now, he and his allies in Congress are pushing his biggest price hike yet: a tax plan that would gut programs Americans rely on—like Medicare, Medicaid, food assistance, and clean energy investments. Trump’s chaos comes with a cost, and it’s American families who are paying the price”
