Governors announce commitment to quadruple heat pumps, goal of 20 million by 2030

Today, the U.S. Climate Alliance announced an ambitious new commitment to quadruple the number of heat pumps in the country by 2030. The goal, announced by Govs. Kathy Hochul, Jay Inslee, and Janet Mills at Climate Week in New York, aims to reach 20 million heat pumps produced and installed across the Alliance’s member states over the next seven years. 

In response, Evergreen Action Buildings Policy Lead Joy Jackson released the following statement: 

“Heat pumps are one of the best tools in our belt for tackling pollution in the buildings sector. In addition to potentially offsetting over 80 percent of fossil fuel appliance pollution, widespread adoption will lower utility costs and maximize peak electricity disruptions from increasingly frequent extreme weather events. 

“As states begin tapping into IRA funding for building decarbonization, they will need to pass complementary policies to accelerate its impact. Today’s announcement from the U.S. Climate Alliance aims to do just that. Following through with these commitments will be critical not only for reducing carbon pollution but also for cleaning our air and improving housing quality in communities across the country. With these targets set, states will continue to lead the charge toward an equitable energy transition.”
