For too long, the United States government has been propping up the fossil fuel industry, using American tax dollars to fill the coffers of oil, gas, and coal corporations.
These subsidies are essentially an investment in pollution—pollution that destroys the climate and causes early deaths, heart attacks, respiratory disorders, and asthma. These subsidies also undermine new technologies and American clean energy businesses in favor of corrupt, polluting multinational corporations.
There’s no two ways about it: In order to stop the climate crisis and to build a more just and equitable economy, federal fossil fuel subsidies must end. President Biden agrees—on the campaign trail, he made a commitment to “end subsidies for fossil fuels” and redirect those resources to “historic investment in clean energy infrastructure.”
Now, President Biden and Congress must act to fulfill the pledge to end all fossil fuel subsidies. In “Stop Investing in Pollution,” we lay out exactly how to make it happen. The federal government must stop directly financing fossil fuel corporations, stop allowing these corporations to use and abuse public lands and waters, and make polluters pay for the damage they cause.
