Evergreen seeks a Director of Finance and Budget to join our growing, high-impact team, establishing a sustainable financial strategy and ensuring fiscal responsibility across the organization. The Director will manage our annual budget, work with our Senior Fundraising Director to conduct forecasting, and advise our Executive Director and Leadership on all finance-related matters. This is an ideal role for someone experienced in building budgets and accounting systems for political organizations or nonprofits, passionate about addressing the climate crisis, and eager to make a difference in a highly-impactful organization.
What You Will Do
- Lead the annual budget creation process, collaborating with our Executive Director, senior leadership, department leads and Board of Directors.
- Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director for financial planning, revenue reporting, forecasting, and budget management.
- Collaborate with the Fundraising and Operations Directors to create income projections and track cash flow and grant deliverables.
- Analyze and present monthly financial reports in a timely and accurate manner.
- Perform financial analysis for contract negotiations and investment decisions.
- Oversee all financial and accounting operations, including banking and external reporting.
- Ensure financial compliance for Evergreen’s 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 in federal, state, and local tax and disclosure laws and GAAP standards.
- Create, support, and implement organizational expense policies
- Support our growing team of leaders, empowering and training them to grow and own department-level budgets.
First-Year Milestones
In your first 90 days, you will have:
- Partnered with our external Finance firm to transition necessary work in-house
- Delivered an annual budget plan, coordinating with all stakeholders.
- Established review of existing financial systems and suggested improvements.
- Established strong working relationships with program leads and executive team members.
In 6 months, you will have:
- Implemented improved financial reporting and budget management systems and procedures.
- Delivered regular financial reports to leadership with narratives explaining key trends and variances.
In 1 year, you will have:
- Led the organization through a full fiscal year cycle with a transparent, sustainable multi-year budget.
- Developed long-term financial strategies to ensure long-term financial health and scalability.
- Improved organizational understanding of budget processes and financial literacy through training, engagement, and transparency.
What You Bring
- 7+ years of experience setting up and managing financial systems and reporting to leadership on organizational financial health.
- A track record of working with multi-entity (c3/c4) campaigns, PACs, or political-leaning nonprofit organizations and related budgets.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team to meet goals while empowering individuals for professional growth.
- Ability to clearly and easily explain financial information to stakeholders, including those without finance backgrounds.
- Experience balancing day-to-day financial operations with long-term planning and organizational development goals.
- Strong alignment with Evergreen's mission of defeating the climate crisis and building a just and thriving clean energy economy.
Nice to have:
- Bill.com, Divvy, and/or Martus experience.
- Familiarity with state and federal compliance rules and regulations (Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona)
- CPA or other relevant certifications
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $165,000
