The IRA took months to put together and pass. It’s over 700 pages long and is home to many complex provisions. You care about people and our planet, and it shows. And there’s a lot more to learn about the law that advances historic investments in confronting climate change and will help build America’s clean energy economy.  

While the IRA will drive down energy costs, create good clean energy jobs, and give the U.S. a fighting chance to cut greenhouse gas pollution in line with our climate goals, it isn’t a silver bullet and comes with oil and gas leasing provisions that will continue to disproportionately harm low-income and BIPOC communities. 

The key to getting it right comes down to how the law is implemented, ensuring that it’s done equitably and effectively and in partnership with federal agencies, states, local communities, Tribal governments, businesses, and other partners.

With unprecedented funding from the federal government, states have a generational opportunity to both implement and build on the federal victories the climate movement secured in 2022. By setting strong clean energy standards, advancing building electrification and efficiency, adopting strong clean car standards, and more, state leadership can maximize impact for their constituents and drive us toward a just, inclusive, and thriving clean energy future.
